West Seti hydro project had been politicised
DHANGADI:
West Seti Major Concern Committee has today demanded that government initiate the work of the country’s largest 750 megawatt West Seti Hydro Project.
At a press meet organised in Dhangadi, West Seti Major Concern Committee chairman Ratan Bahadur Saud said that West Seti hydro project had been politicised.
He maintained West Seti is not only related to people of far-western region but also to the country’s future.
Saud complained that people of 16 VDCs of four districts had been living with fear of inundation and flood for many years.
Legislature Parliament’s Committee on Natural Resources’ directive asking the Nepal Government not to implement the agreement Nepal inked with Chinese Company Three Gorges Corporations, since it has riled the West Seti Major Concern Committee and locals.
Saud said the government has not allocated development budget to the 16 VDCs of Baitadi, Bajhang, Dadeldhura and Doti which are likely to be affected by the hydro project for the past two decades. He asked the government to make final call on the future of the West Seti.
At the press meeting, West Seti Major Concern Committee General Secretary Bishnu Chand warned of stern protest if the government did not go ahead with the project. “We are waiting for the report of the Parliament. We will announce agitation once the report comes out,” Chand added.
Chand has threatened to bar the political leaders from entering the far-west if they continue politicising the West Seti Hydro project. “Many leaders did politics in the name of West Seti. But, now onwards, we shall not spare them,” Chand warned.
Tilak Bahadur Singh, a local of West Seti affected area, accused that game of the commission had begun in the project. “Greedy politicians have halted the construction work due to their inability to get the commission as per their demand,” Singh alleged.
Singh, who is also the member of West Seti Major Concern Committee, urged the government to give a way out to the people of West-Seti affected area. Earlier, plan to construct West Seti Hydro Project by building 195 tall embankment was aborted. Then an Australian company had signed the agreement with Nepal Government for the project.
From 1996 to 2000, the Australian company had conducted the evaluation of the environmental impact in seven phases. After the company developed environmental management work plan and rehabilitation work plan, its license was scrapped.
Survey carried out by the Australian company, states that 2,326 hectares of the private and public land had to be acquisitioned for the project. Around 12,914 persons would have to be rehabilitated. The company had estimated Rs 1 billion and 20 crores US dollars for the hydro project’s construction.
